JP-8080 Vocoder

The Vocoder (formant filter) operates essentially like the filter bank but it takes one sound (the Vocal input) and "modulates" the other. It is necessary to supply two different sounds to the Voice Modulator for this effect. The other sound (carrier) is supplied to the Lower input to the Voice modulator. The carrier can be externally supplied sound by way of the INST/LOWER input or internally by the VOCAL MOD SEND button.

Here's a way to setup the vocoder using an internal sound:

1. Pick a patch that you want to use as the carrier. It can be upper or lower patch.

2. For the patch you have selected, turn on Voice Mod Send. This supplies that patch's output to the lower portion of the Voice modulator.

3. Under EDIT + 2, turn on Ext/Vocal -> Upper. This routes an audio signal to the Upper part of the Voice Modulator.

4. Supply a modulator signal to the front mic connector or to the rear vocal/upper connector. Be sure to select front or rear depending on the connection you are using.

5. Set up the Single, Dual, Split and midi channels so you can trigger the internal carrier voice by midi or the by front "chicklet" keys. You need to trigger the upper or lower patch you had selected Voice Mod Send.

6. Trigger the Voice Mod Send patch. You should not hear anything until you modulate it using the Vocal sound. If you do, you are triggering the other patch.

More to come soon. I typing this from memory at work.

Set up the Vocoder using external sound.

1. Under EDIT + 2, turn on Ext/Vocal -> Upper. This routes an audio signal to the Upper part of the Voice Modulator.

2. Under EDIT+2, turn on Ext/Inst. -> Lower. This routes an audio signal to the Lower part of the Voice Modulator.

4. Supply a modulator signal to the front mic connector or to the rear vocal/upper connector. Be sure to select front or rear depending on the connection you are using.

5. Supply a carrier signal to the rear Inst/Lower connector.

6. Supply the Lower/Inst sound. You should not hear anything until you modulate it using the Vocal sound.

More soon again. I'm typing this from memory.
